Voices of tomorrow: Young minds champion alternatives to imprisonment at the “Probation
Cup - Equilibrium"
The “Probation Cup – Equilibrium” marked the first youth debate tournament under the EU/UNODC #JUST4ALL initiative. The event brought together 56 students from 20 universities across Bishkek to debate key issues around alternatives to imprisonment in Kyrgyzstan.
Participants tackled challenging topics, including public perceptions of probation, the ethics of indefinite prison sentences based on rehabilitation assessments. Their arguments showcased strong reasoning, quick thinking, and persuasive communication – all delivered in concise one-minute speeches, even on controversial ideas.
Manat Janova, one of the tournament winners, shared: “This well-organized event, supported by the government and the #JUST4ALL, truly inspired me. It encourages young people to think critically and talk about issues like probation that are often overlooked.”
Probation officers also joined the event, actively observing and engaging in the discussions. Their feedback led to the recognition of four outstanding speakers, who received medals and certificates for their contributions.
Reflecting on the tournament, Probation Officer Nursultan Ulanbekov commended the participants for their thoughtful input and respectful exchanging, noting that their ideas can help improve probation practices going forward.
“Youth are a vital part of society, and it's important they are engaged in these discussions,” said George Abadjian, UNODC Programme Coordinator and Head of the EU/UNODC #JUST4ALL initiative. “At UNODC, we value their perspectives and aim to reflect them in our work. We’re keen to continue this dialogue with young people.”
The Youth Debate Tournament was jointly organized by the Ministry of Justice’s Probation Department, the EU/UNODC “JUST4ALL” project, the Kyrgyz State Medical Academy Debate Club, and @Bright International School.
This event highlighted the power of youth engagement in shaping more inclusive and effective rehabilitation and probation systems. By fostering awareness and critical thinking, initiatives like this contribute to building a safer and more just society.
