UNODC congratulated the General Prosecutor’s Office of the Republic of Uzbekistan on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of its establishment during the international scientific and practical conference "Prosecutor's Office of Uzbekistan: yesterday, today and tomorrow", held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan on 16 December 2021.
The conference was opened by Mr. Nigmatilla Yuldoshev, the Prosecutor General of the Republic of Uzbekistan, who noted the long history of the institution and elaborated on the development of large-scale and intensive activities of the prosecutor's office to further protect human rights and freedoms in its pursuit of the implementation of the rule of law and the triumph of justice.
At the end of his speech, the Prosecutor General called on the participants for active and constructive discussion on the agenda items.
UNODC and the General Prosecutor’s Office have established a close and lasting partnership in many different areas of work, ranging from crime prevention to the fight against trafficking in persons, anti-corruption, money laundering and terrorist financing, asset recovery, as well as international cooperation and mutual legal assistance in the investigation of transnational organized crime among others.
Addressing over 100 representatives from the General Prosecutor’s Office, Parliament, law enforcement, judicial bodies, ministries, donor organizations and think tanks, Mr. Koen Marquering, representing UNODC’s Regional Office for Central Asia, lauded the revision of criminal legislation and emphasized the need for further strengthening the criminal justice system in accordance with international standards.
“Together with the General Prosecutor’s Office and its Academy, we are working to introduce new data collection methods, such as victimization surveys and urban safety governance assessments, which can help to promote evidence-based crime prevention. We have joined forces to build the resilience of youth to drug use and crime through sports and educational programs. UNODC welcomes the discussion on the future of prosecutorial work in Uzbekistan at this conference. We encourage Uzbek authorities to assess their prosecution service based on the 1990 Guidelines on the Role of Prosecutors, which assist UN Member States in ensuring that human rights underpin their prosecution services and criminal proceedings are effective, impartial, and fair”, Mr. Marquering completed.
Two parallel sessions at the conference, "The role of the prosecutor's office in ensuring the rights of citizens, the interests of the state and society" and "The role of the prosecutor's office in combating crime", were held to facilitate experience exchange among representatives of prosecutor's offices of foreign countries, educational and research institutions as well as national specialists and experts.
The cooperation with the General Prosecutor’s office and its Academy aligns with the recently launched new UNODC 2022-2025 Programme for Central Asia which reflects national priorities in respect with the Rule of Law and Sustainable Development Goals.
