CdE experts participate in training event in Colombia
Brasilia, 30 November, 2021 - Experts from UNODC Brazil's Center of Excellence for the Reduction of Illicit Drug Supply (CdE) travelled to Colombia, from November 22 to 26, to participate in a series of workshops on the cocaine production chain and pricing of illicit drugs.
The workshops took place under the technical advisory agreement established between the CdE and the Integrated Crop Monitoring System (SIMCI) project of the UNODC country office in Colombia. The objective of the partnership is to transfer technology and technical advice in the form of a strategic study and methodology aimed at monitoring price fluctuations of illicit drugs in Brazil, which will allow for the identification of potential impacts of the illicit drugs market on Brazilian criminal dynamics.
The objective of the partnership is to transfer technology and technical advice in the development and implementation of a methodology to monitor the prices of illicit drugs in Brazil. Hence, it will also be possible to identify potential impacts that variations in the illicit drugs market could cause in the Brazilian criminal dynamics.
Exchange of experiences
In Tolima, Colombia, the CdE experts visited the facilities of the International School for the Use of Police Force for Peace (CENOP), where they exchanged experiences on the development of technical and scientific research to confront cocaine production and trafficking with representatives of UNODC Colombia, the Anti-Narcotics Directorate of the National Police and the International Center for Strategic Studies against Narco-trafficking.
In addition, the experts participated in an inter-institutional workshop to strengthen the monitoring of prices and the illicit drug market, learning the reality of more than 40 representatives of entities linked to the fight against drug trafficking in the neighboring country.
For the coordinator of the CdE, Gabriel Andreuccetti, the experience allows the survey of new research approaches on the illicit drug market. "The strategies for monitoring illicit drug prices have become a fundamental tool for better understanding the cocaine market in Colombia, serving as an alert system for increasingly frequent changes in drug trafficking on the world stage," he says.
From the technical cooperation with UNODC in Colombia, the CdE will build a strategic study on the pricing of illicit drugs, showing the experiences of the neighboring country and possible applications in Brazil.
The pilot project of the Center of Excellence for the Reduction of Illicit Drug Supply (CdE) is the result of an innovative partnership between the National Secretariat for Drug Policy and Asset Management of the Ministry of Justice and Public Security (SENAD/MJSP), the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).
