UNODC gathers international sport professionals in Rio to discuss violence prevention
Rio de Janeiro, 27 November 2017 - The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) is undertaking until 1 December in Rio de Janeiro an exchange mission on experiences in crime and drug prevention through sport.
In the event will participate physical education professionals, sport managers and specialists from countries such as Bangladesh, Belgium, Colombia, Dominican Republic, India, Kyrgyzstan, Palestine, Peru, South Africa and Uganda.
During a week, the group will participate on workshops, visit Olympic Villages and learn about innovative projects on sports that have been implemented in the Brazilian city.
The aim of the visit is to promote the exchange of experiences in prevention through sports with teachers and young people living in communities affected by drug traffic and violence.
The initiative is part of the programme Line Up, Live Up (Vamos Nessa, in Portuguese), a UNODC's global action to prevent through sport practice. The project addresses to 11-to-17-years-old youth at risk, and aims to strengthen their resilience by motivating development of life skills.
The programme is being implemented and tested in sport centres in Rio de Janeiro and Distrito Federal, in association with local governments.
In September, UNODC trained 12 physical education teachers who work in Olympic Villages in Rio. After the initial training, the programme has been implemented in 6 Olympic Villages, and its main goal is to reach 400 youth until the end of the year.
