In a visit to Paraguay, Ban Ki-moon highlights the fight against drug trafficking and organized crime

Asuncion, 03 March 2015 - In an official visit to the South American region, which included Paraguay and Chile, the highest authority of the United Nations, Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, developed an intense agenda in Paraguay during the 25th and February 26 th. The visit included encounters and meetings with national authorities, civil society and the Country Team of the United Nations, including the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Paraguay.  The Representative of the Liaison and Partnership Office UNODC Brazil and the Southern Cone, Rafael Franzini, was is Paraguay for the occasion and attended the meeting with the Secretary.

At a press conference, Ban Ki-moon noted the important steps the country is taking in the fight against drug trafficking. "Paraguay is also on board of the global efforts to combat drug trafficking and organized crime," he said. He also mentioned the significant achievements in improving access of the population to education, health, drinking water, and urged the promotion of sustainable and inclusive development.

This is the second time a UN Secretary General visits Paraguay. This time has a special character as it coincides with the 70th anniversary of the United Nations Organization.

The Representative, Rafael Franzini, accompanied by UNODC Paraguay team, the Senior Advisor, Juan Manuel Martínez, and Program Coordinator, Norberto Gamarra, conducted courtesy and monitoring visits to the National Integrated Programme "Strengthening the Rule of Law, Security and Justice in Paraguay". Rafael and his team met with the Executive Secretary Minister of the National Anti-Drug Secretariat (SENAD), Luis Rojas; and with the Executive Secretary Minister of the National Anticorruption Secretariat (SENAC), Soledad Quiñónez.

The National Integrated Programme provides technical assistance from UNODC Paraguay in support of the policies and actions of the national government in the fight against organized crime and strengthening the rule of law.
