UNODC opens new office in Brasilia
Brasília, 21 January, 2014 - The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) inaugurated yesterday its new premises in downtown Brasília. The new address completes a partnership officially signed in May 2013 between the Executive Director of UNODC, Yury Fedotov, and the Minister of Justice, José Eduardo Cardozo. The event held last year formalized the expansion of operations of UNODC in Brazil and South America.
As a Liaison and Partnership Office, the UNODC office in Brasília focuses on regional cooperation and inter-regional cooperation, including South-South initiatives, with an emphasis on promoting collaboration and dialogue with other countries, based on international best practices. For this, UNODC and the Brazilian government are developing a joint working plan with the aim of creating a neutral platform for international cooperation.
UNODC has been operating in the country for over 20 years, and since 2001 has had a regional office located in Brasília, covering Brazil and also Argentina, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay.
