Crime Commission to meet in Vienna for its nineteenth session
13 May 2010 - The nineteenth session of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice will be held in Vienna from 17 to 21 May. One of the key issues to be addressed will be ways to tackle trafficking in cultural property. The Commission will consider how Member States can best protect and preserve their cultural heritage in the face of the growing involvement of organized criminal groups in all aspects of such trafficking.
The Commission will also review the conclusions and recommendations of the recently concluded Twelfth United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, which was held in April in Salvador, Brazil. Trends in world crime and emerging issues in crime prevention and criminal justice will be discussed during this session of the Crime Commission, as well as ratification and implementation of the conventions and international instruments against transnational organized crime, corruption and terrorism.
A number of side events will be organized, including: a presentation on witness protection in Africa; a global review of the death penalty; United Nations responses to children and youth in crime; a review of the latest developments in crime; and the involvement of organized criminal groups in trafficking in persons and smuggling of migrants. In addition, UNODC will present a variety of legal tools that it has developed to provide States and criminal justice practitioners with practical information to facilitate effective implementation of international drug control and organized crime treaties.
