UNODC Executive Director Yury Fedotov in Official Visit to the Islamic Republic of Iran

17 February 2015 - Tehran, UNODC Executive Director Yury Fedotov paid an official visit to the Islamic Republic of Iran on the 16 February. He joined the Minister of Interior and Secretary General of the Drug Control Headquarters of the Islamic Republic of Iran, H.E. Mr. Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli in opening the ''Second International Meeting of the Ministers/ Heads of the Counter Narcotics Agencies on combating drug trafficking, assessment and development of drug situation in the region''. Senior regional counter narcotics officials from Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Pakistan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan participated in the event.

Mr. Fedotov also had the opportunity to hold bi-lateral meetings to discuss and exchange important aspects of drugs and crime control policies and challenges in the region and the expansion of cooperation between the Islamic Republic of Iran and UNODC under the new Country Partnership Programme (2015-2019) with the Minister of Interior Mr. Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli as well as Heads of various delegations.

During the visit, Mr. Fedotov remarked UNODC's willingness to further strengthen its cooperation with the Government of Iran and to continue supporting the ongoing process of implementation of United Nations Conventions through capacity, legislation and institution building. Moreover, he reminded that sub regional, regional and international cooperation in the fight against drugs and crime are top priorities for UNODC.



Mohammad Sepehrnoush Mr. Fedotov referred to the newly developed UNODC Iran Country Partnership Programme on Drugs and Crime (2015-2019) planned to be signed and launched in March 2015, as an important tool to promote UNODC and international community dialogue and cooperation on drugs and crime with the country.

 

 


  Bilateral Meeting of UNODC Executive Director and Interior MinisterFacilitating regional and international cooperation, in fact, is a key component of the UNODC Iran programme; it features prominently in each of the areas of work: drug demand reduction, HIV treatment and care, and harm reduction; alternative livelihoods, illicit trafficking and border management; rule of law, transnational organized crime, anti-corruption, anti money laundering and financing of terrorism, and Judicial cooperation.

During his mission, Mr.Fedotov also visited the UNODC office in Tehran.
