|
Tehran, 03 June 2019 - The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in the Islamic Republic of Iran and the International Narcotics Control Board (INCB) jointly organized a workshop for the Iranian authorities from Drug Control Headquarters, Judiciary, Anti-Narcotics Police and Customs Administration on investigation of precursors incidents in May 2019.
The event held with strong level of participation by the Islamic Republic of Iran, aimed to improve the investigation techniques of the Iranian authorities with regards to the precursors trafficking cases as well as information and intelligence exchange with countries of origin and destination as well as related international organizations.
During this closed-door event, the participants discussed actual incident information and explored ways for extending cooperation and timely exchange of information bilaterally and through the INCB's Precursors Incident Communication System (PICS).
Iran remains as one of the major transit routes for smuggling of illicit precursors into Afghanistan through its intermodal transportation systems. UNODC has built a strong partnership with the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran in several areas including the capacity building for the Iranian law enforcements and has been providing technical assistance to the Iranian Government in their fight against illicit trafficking of drugs and precursors.
The event was organized as part of the activities foreseen in the framework of the Sup-programme 1 "Border Management and Illicit Trafficking" of UNODC Country Partnership Programme (2015-2019) for the Islamic Republic of Iran through the generous donation of the Government of Japan.
