The Islamic Republic of Iran joined the global efforts in fight against corruption

Tehran, 16 th December 2019 - The 8 th Session of Conference of States Parties to the United Nations Convention against Corruption was opened in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. In his opening statement, Mr. Yury Fedotov, Executive Director of UNODC believed that preventing and combatting corruption offers a key to unlock progress towards ending poverty and inequalities, protecting health and planet, and strengthening justice and the rule of law. He gave trust that, the 8 th CoSP UNCAC can advance efforts to achieve these global goals and hoped that, the representations of States Parties will make the most of this critical opportunity. He highlighted the fact that by preventing and curbing corruption, the States Parties can nip corruption's contribution to instability in the bud, can stop corruption from prolonging conflict and spoiling peace, and can check illicit financial flows and return resources to where they are needed.
Referring to the Implementation Review Mechanism, he drew attentions on its visible impact, with 97 per cent of States parties taking part, and some 80 per cent reporting on positive changes undertaken following their reviews. He included the work begun in Abu Dhabi will keep the international spotlight on corruption through next year and beyond, preparing for the first-ever General Assembly Special Session against corruption in 2021 that would offer a genuine chance to agree new approaches and seek innovative solutions to corruption threats facing all our countries.
The UN Office on Drugs and Crime is helping to advance global action as the international community heads towards the 2021 UNGASS, including through the Secretary-General's UN system-wide task force.
The delegation of the Islamic Republic of Iran in the 8 th CoSP UNCAC was supported by the UNODC Country Office in Iran. The Islamic Republic of Iran was represented by H.E. Dr. Mahmoud Hekmatnia, Deputy Minister of Justice and Secretary of National Focal Point of UNCAC who leads the delegation comprised of senior experts from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Justice and the Permanent Mission of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations in Vienna.
The UNODC Country Office in Iran continues supporting the national anti-corruption efforts in line with the resolutions of CoSPs UNCAC, objectives of UNODC Country Partnership Programme in the Islamic Republic of Iran and advancements of Implementation Review Mechanism. The partnership would include exchanging expertise in the areas of prevention, criminalization, law enforcement and asset recovery, as well as expanding international cooperation on anti-corruption matters.
