International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, commemorated by the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran with participation of UNODC Iran
Tehran, 26 June 2022 – The commemoration of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking was held by the Drug Control Headquarters (DCHQ) on 26 June 2023 with close cooperation of UNODC Iran. Several high-level participants including Minister of Interior of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Governors of Tehran, Khorassan Razavi, Kerman, Golestan, Semnan and Mazandaran Provinces, as well as officials and experts from national institutions, famous national sports figures and athletes, media and press, NGOs and CSOs, Ambassadors and members of the international community, as well as representatives from the United Nations agencies joined the event.
Secretary General of the Drug Control Headquarters, Mr. Momeni in his opening statement highlighted Iran’s endeavors on drug control and seizures and stated that Iran has not only reinforced supply reduction strategies against illicit narcotics, psychoactive substances and chemical precursors, but at the same time has taken necessary measures in the field of prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of the people who use drugs. Mr. Momeni further underlined Iran’s efforts in the field of supply reduction and stated that by seizing 800 tons of different types of narcotics, Iran continues to be accounted for having the highest seizures of opiates in the world.
Mr. Alexander Fedulov, UNODC Iran Country Representative, in his remarks, recognized Iran’s efforts and contribution in combating drug trafficking at regional and international level. He referred to continuous UNODC cooperation with the Government of Iran and DCHQ through its fifth Country Partnership Programme 2023-2026, recently signed in Vienna. He highlighted the importance which UNODC gives to strong partnership with Iran, while presenting several examples of successful interventions and cooperation with national counterparts and stated that UNODC uses best practices and experiences gained through years in continuation of its cooperation with the Government of Iran.
The Minister of Interior, Mr. Ahmad Vahidi, referred to existing requirements of Iran on drug control matters and expectation of Iranian government from international community and the United Nations to provide ample assistance and higher cooperation with Iran based on principles of common and shared responsibility. He underlined the importance of Iran’s eastern border with Afghanistan and referred to measures taken by the government and stated that more comprehensive plan for closing the borders is on the agenda. Minister Vahidi stated that the Iranian Law Enforcement has and will continue the efforts in countering drug trafficking and arrest of major drug kingpins.
During the ceremony and by the order of Commander in Chief of the Islamic Republic of Iran Police, the Anti Narcotic Police and law enforcement of Iran held a burning ceremony of 64 tons of different types of drugs in South Khorassan province, televised through internet.
In the course of this event, some of drug control activists and prevention ambassadors as well as families of drug control martyr and some of the veterans received appreciation letters from the Minister of Interior and Secretary General of the Drug Control Headquarters. A group of stamps, especially designed and printed on the occasion of the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, was also introduced.
