Gender and the Doha Declaration Global Programme
The Global Programme for the Implementation of the Doha Declaration recognizes that gender equality and women’s empowerment is fundamental for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Understanding the impact and the different roles of women and men in relation to drugs, crime and various criminal justice systems is crucial when implementing activities and designing tools and resources.
The Global Programme focuses its efforts towards supporting the achievement of SDG 5 on Gender Equality by undertaking activities to raise awareness on gender-related issues within educational-, judicial-, prison- and sports-related environments and settings. As part of this, the Doha Declaration Global Programme has achieved a gender balance of 51 per cent female and 49 per cent male among beneficiaries. Through the Global Programme’s 200+ publications and tools, gender perspectives are taken into account at each stage of the process, from development to dissemination. Internally, the Global Programme comprises 60 per cent female and 40 per cent male staff.
The work of the Global Programme is aligned with UNODC’s Strategy for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (2018-2021). Further information on UNODC’s gender related work can be found on UNODC’s gender website.
