India: Mr. Marco Teixeira takes over as the new UNODC Regional Representative for South Asia
Mr. Marco Teixeira, a national of Portugal, assumed responsibilities as the incoming Representative of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, Regional Office for South Asia (UNODC ROSA).
Within UNODC, Mr. Teixeira has led programme development and implementation, partnership building and resource mobilization efforts in various positions, including recently as i) Programme Coordinator (Head of Office in Mozambique and Malawi) in Maputo (from June 2021 to September 2022); ii) Senior Programme Officer with the Division for Treaty Affairs in Vienna leading the Global Programme for the implementation of the Doha Declaration (Jan.2019-May 2021); iii) Programme Officer (Law Enforcement Expert) (2016-2019) in that same division; iv) Head, Organized Crime, Illicit Trafficking and Terrorism section in Regional Office for West and Central Africa, Dakar (2014-2016); v) Programme Coordinator in Liberia and Sierra Leonne (2013-2014); and vi) Law Enforcement Adviser in the Programme Office in Guinea-Bissau (2011-2012).
Bangladesh: UNODC-GLO.ACT launches the first national study on Trafficking in Persons
The First UNODC National Study on Trafficking in Persons in Bangladesh was launched by the Government of Bangladesh and GLO.ACT Bangladesh in Dhaka, in a special event presided over by the Minister of Home Affairs, Minister of Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment and the Head of Delegation of the European Union in Bangladesh. The study highlights economic vulnerabilities and climate change as significant TIP risk factors in Bangladesh.
Bangladesh: UNODC conducts a strategy-setting mission
UNODC conducted a strategy-setting mission to Bangladesh to present the developments with regard to the Office’s operations in South Asia, and to support partnership building and opportunities for collaboration in the country. The mission was combined with a special focus and actions on countering trafficking in persons and related areas.
Bhutan: UNODC enhances multi-stakeholder cooperation and public awareness to counter Trafficking in Persons
A series of two-day trainings on countering Trafficking in Persons were organised in collaboration with the Department of Law and Order, Bhutan, for over 100 representatives from local government, frontline organisations, health workers and civil society in the Pema Gatshel, Trashiyangtse and Trashigang Dzongkhags. About 3,871 young people were also engaged through special awareness programs on preventing human trafficking.
India: At NCERT Conference on Mental Health, UNODC pushes for education on integrity and SDGs to strengthen socio-emotional resilience among young people
UNODC delivered a technical session on ways to meaningfully engage young people through education and strengthening their socio-emotional resilience at a two-day NCERT National Conference on Mental Health and Well-being in Schools and Role of School Administrators. The Conference engaged and sensitised over 500 school administrators, leaders and other stakeholders on the need to advance mental health care among young people with exchange of good practices and expertise. At the Conference, UNODC showcased the Global Resource for Anti-Corruption Education (GRACE) Initiative, free-to-use educational resources and tools on crime prevention, integrity and ethics, and good practices including the Lockdown Learners series from South Asia.
India: UNODC showcases Family Skills Programme at state-level multi-stakeholder consultation in Mizoram
A state-level multi-stakeholder consultation for key government departments was conducted at Aizwal, Mizoram in Northeast India, in collaboration with Department of Social Welfare and Tribal Affairs. With the consultation, UNODC showcased the Family Skills Programme and discussed cooperation on implementing the same in India’s Northeastern region.
Maldives: UNODC assists Maldivian authorities to train trainers in the area of juvenile justice
UNODC delivered an online follow-up training session for the Training of Trainers on juvenile justice for officials from the Department of Juvenile Justice, Maldives Correctional Services, Juvenile Court, Prosecutor General’s Office, and Maldives Police Service. The training session built on previous initiatives, including a technical assistance needs assessment that UNODC carried out in 2020 to identify needs and gaps of the Maldivian juvenile justice system as well as the development of a comprehensive national training programme on juvenile justice in 2021.
Nepal: UNODC conducts training on wildlife crime scene management
With support of the US Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs, and as a part of the South Asia activities under the Global Programme on Crimes that Affect the Environment (GPCAE), UNODC trained 22 law enforcement and criminal justice officials in Nepal through a three-day training on wildlife crime scene management held from 17-19 October in Nagarkot. The training consisted of a mixture of theory and practical sessions on aspects of national laws and challenges, electronic evidence, collecting and submitting evidence, pathogen exposure, etc. pertaining to wildlife crime. The sessions of the training were designed as per the needs identified by participants in previous UNODC consultations with relevant wildlife agencies in Nepal.

Sri Lanka: UNODC strengthens capacity of community groups, government officials and criminal justice practitioners to promote fundamental rights
UNODC hosted three capacity-building workshops on promoting access to justice and protecting fundamental rights for 160 state officials and 75 senior police officers in Southern Province and Eastern Province of Sri Lanka. The trainings were designed to enhance understanding of applicable legal frameworks and provisions to protect fundamental rights. Discussions focused on addressing issues of fear of stigmatization, cultural perceptions, social alienation and public trust in law enforcement.
