Building Back Better:
Strengthening Security, Peace, Justice and Health
South Asia: Advancing cooperation and outreach on peace, security, justice and health with government and UN partners

Focusing on countering Trafficking in Persons, the Bhutan National Prevention and Response Strategy 2021--along with the action plan developed in close consultation with key stakeholder agencies--was launched on 12 January by the Home Minister, Government of Bhutan. The Strategy will guide the planning and implementation of various activities to address and combat Trafficking in Persons in Bhutan.
In collaboration with the Department of Law and Order, UNODC also conducted a set of virtual trainings on the use of the Standard Operating Procedures to counter Trafficking in Persons. Participants comprised 26 labour officials and inspectors from the Ministry of Labour and Human Resources and 18 officials of Bhutanese foreign missions from nine countries--including Australia (Canberra), Bangladesh, India (New Delhi, Guwahati, Kolkata), Kuwait, Switzerland (Geneva), Thailand (Bangkok) and US (New York). To strengthen public awareness on Trafficking in Persons, a campaign focusing on UNODC’s Blue Heart campaign was convened on 14 January, engaging 78 senior artistes from the Academy of Performing Arts in Thimphu.

India: UNODC’s ‘Lockdown Learners’ mobilises youth action on peace, SDGs through education

In January, UNODC’s Lockdown Learners series in India continued to engage youth and educators on themes related to peace, ethics, Global Goals and crime prevention through activity-based learning. 7 interactive sessions were conducted with over 450 students and educators from diverse socio-economic backgrounds in 4 states/Union Territories. The series also provided a platform of action for young people in co-creating a range of initiatives, including community outreach via Whatsapp and audio notes on COVID-19 vaccination and awareness and music and art for social change. In support of the Lockdown Learners series, a group of students from the city of Bengaluru conceptualized and developed a calendar, focusing on the SDGs and wildlife crime. The school will sell the calendar to the general public at a nominal rate, and donate the proceeds to a local zoo. Since April 2020, the series has directly engaged over 14,000 students and educators from 16 states/Union Territories, and shared educational content with over 19,000 youth, in collaboration with the Navodaya Vidyalaya Samity, Government of India and public/private schools.
Bangladesh: UNODC trains prison staff on crisis management during COVID-19

About 60 prison staff from 20 prisons in Bangladesh were trained on crisis management during COVID-19 and its psychosocial impact. Participants welcomed the initiative, acknowledging the need for a comprehensive programme to help prison population effectively manage the pandemic. During the discussion, they advocated for a mechanism to enable the appointment of psychologists and correction officers in prisons to address mental and psychological issues. UNODC will train eight batches of prison staff in all, in the coming weeks.
