How would you feel if you could no longer enjoy your favorite native soup because the tree that produces its key ingredient has gone extinct? Or imagine a world where food scarcity worsens because agricultural yields have drastically declined due to an uncontrollable termite population - an unintended consequence of pangolin extinction. Our world is at a tipping point, and wildlife is disappearing at an alarming rate. Despite two decades of concerted national and international efforts, illegal wildlife trade and trafficking persist, as highlighted in the UNODC World Wildlife Report 2024. Wildlife is essential to maintaining ecological balance, and a world where it exists only in history books and on dinner plates is not one we should desire. Protecting wildlife is not just the responsibility of conservationists, it’s a collective duty. Here are five impactful ways you can contribute to safeguarding wildlife and ensuring a sustainable future for our planet."
1. Volunteer for Wildlife Protection Projects
Giving your time to wildlife conservation efforts can make a tangible difference. Many organizations offer opportunities to participate in habitat restoration, animal rescue, and conservation research. Whether it's helping at local organizations like the Nigeria Park Service and Lekki Conservation Center or joining global conservation initiatives, your hands-on support can aid in protecting vulnerable species from being extinct.
2. Reduce Plastic Waste
Don’t finish that carbonated drink and trash the bottle inappropriately. Plastic pollution is one of the biggest threats to wildlife, particularly marine animals. Birds, turtles, and fish often mistake plastic for food, leading to fatal consequences. You can help by reducing your use of single-use plastics, opting for reusable bags and bottles, and properly disposing of plastic waste. Supporting brands that use sustainable packaging also contributes to reducing plastic waste in our environment. If you would like to turn in your waste for a token, check out the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) and other relevant sites for a list of waste collection and recycling centers.
3. Share Conservation Messages with Your Friends
Raising awareness is a powerful tool for change. By sharing information about wildlife conservation on social media, you help educate others about the importance of protecting our planet’s biodiversity. Whether it’s posting articles, supporting campaigns, or engaging in discussions, spreading the word encourages more people to take action. In commemoration of the 2024 World Wildlife Day, UNODC launched the #BeWildForNature wildlife sensitization campaign to galvanize youth support and action for wildlife conservation in Nigeria. It was a success, with 18-year-old Tariq Lawal emerging as the winner. Take a look for some inspiration on messages and initiatives to support wildlife conservation in Nigeria.
4. Support Wildlife-Friendly Businesses
Every purchase we make has an impact. Choosing eco-friendly products and supporting businesses that prioritize sustainable practices help protect wildlife habitats. Look for brands that avoid products linked to deforestation, use ethical sourcing, and contribute to conservation efforts. Organizations like Planet3R and Ecobarter are doing amazing work in this regard and you can see more Nigerians driving sustainable change for the planet in this article. Your buying choices can drive companies toward more sustainable operations. Beyond buying, you can equally empower yourself to start producing.
5. Spread Awareness About Endangered Species
Many species are on the brink of extinction due to human activities. Learning about endangered animals and sharing their stories can inspire others to take action. Support organizations that work toward species conservation, and advocate for policies that protect threatened wildlife. Every voice matters in the fight to save these animals from extinction.
Protecting wildlife is not just about large-scale efforts, it starts with small, everyday actions. While the world has commemorated the 2025 World Wildlife Day, it is pivotal that we continue to drive conversations and initiatives that will better protect wildlife and make the world safer and more habitable for everyone. There is no planet B – let’s ensure that future generations inherit a world rich in biodiversity and thriving ecosystems.
