During January-February period, UNODC Regional Office in Central Asia conducted two "mentorships" under the UNODC-World Customs Organization (WCO) Global Container Control Programme (CCP). This time, the mentorships targeted the officers of the Customs Service under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, the Drug Control Agency under the President of the Republic of Tajikistan serving at the Port Control Units (PCU) of "Dushanbe-2" and "Nizhniy Pyanj" Customs posts in Tajikistan, as well as the officers of the State Revenue Committee of the Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Kazakhstan, members of the PCUs at the "Altynkol" Customs posts in Kazakhstan.
The "mentorship" trainings aimed to enhance theoretical and practical skills of PCU officers in "profiling" and inspection of the containers/consignments, as well as application of modern methods and system of customs control. The experts from UNODC and WCO facilitated the trainings.
Taking into account the specific nature of the trainings, CCP jointly with the Governments of Kazakhstan and Tajikistan organized the activities at the Customs posts, the deployment area of the PCUs, and delivered practical sessions on "profiling" high-risks consignments, analysis of cargo documents and inspection of the containers/consignments.
The "mentorships" also provided unique opportunity to enhance practical cooperation among border control agencies in Central Asia and wider region on high-risk consignments in real time. One of the outcomes from the above mentorship programmes involved information exchanges among PCUs of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan that lead to detection of Customs violations and seizure of mis-declared goods.
The CCP Regional Segment for Central Asia is funded by the Government of Japan, the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL), and the Export Control and Related Border Security (EXBS) Program.
