18-22 February 2019, Astana, Kazakhstan - The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime Regional Office for Central Asia (UNODC) organized training on "Methods of Information Processing and Analysis using Analytical Software" for 18 officers of the Border Service of the National Security Committee of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The training took place at the premises of the Nazarbayev University in Astana, Republic of Kazakhstan.
"It is a timely and very effective course for the Border Services of the National Security Committee of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Border cooperation component of the UNODC Programme for Central Asia is successfully implementing its activities in the Republic of Kazakhstan. I hope that cooperation between the Border Service of the National Security Committee of the Republic of Kazakhstan and UNODC will be further strengthened." - noted Mr. Igor Cherepkov, Adviser to the Director of Border Service under National Security Committee of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
Experienced trainers from CARICC and UNODC with expertise in application of analytical software such as Excel, ArcGIS, IBM i2 for collection, analysis and systematization of data, facilitated the training. The training aimed to equip the border officers with new knowledge and skills on information processing, analysis and its visualization with the help of various analytical software tools.
H.E. Mr. Tatsuhiko Kasai, a new Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Kazakhstan, also attended the training to welcome the participants. He informed that the Government of Japan considers countering illegal drug trafficking and terrorism as highly important issues in Central Asia and remains ready to further support UNODC programme.
"The processing and analysis of information is a crucial factor in the work of law-enforcement officers. With a help of CARICC and UNODC ROCA experts, the knowledge received will be effectively applied and enhance cross-border information exchange for countering illicit drug trafficking" - highlighted Mr. Yusuf Kurbonov, UNODC International Program Coordinator of the Border Security and Cross-Border Cooperation component.
The event is a part of the «Countering the trafficking of Afghan opiates via the northern route by enhancing the capacity of key border crossing points and through the establishment of Border Liaison Offices» component of the UNODC Programme for Central Asia 2015-2019, and is funded by the Government of Japan.
