Progress in implementing legislation to counter the financing of terrorism in Indonesia

Jakarta (Indonesia), 9 March 2010 - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia, with the support of the UNODC Terrorism Prevention Branch, organized a workshop on the implementation of legal measures to counter the financing of terrorism. The workshop was held in Bogor City, Indonesia, on 25 and 26 February 2010.

Participants included representatives from Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, the Attorney General's Office, the Supreme Court, the Coordinating Desk for Combating Terrorism, the National Police and the Bank of Indonesia.

The objective of the workshop was to work towards finalizing the draft legislative provisions on countering the financing of terrorism and the freezing of assets. The first day was devoted to discussing the international legal requirements on countering the financing of terrorism and to learn from regional experiences. On the second day, the participants reviewed the existing national legal framework on countering the financing of terrorism and discussed progress made towards the full implementation of international requirements.

As a result of the workshop, the relevant national authorities recommended, among other things, that a country-specific medium-term programme for implementing relative legislation and enhancing national capacities on counter-terrorism be developed. In that regard, the Terrorism Prevention Branch of UNODC will provide technical assistance to the Government of Indonesia.
