UNODC supports study visit to USA of Kazakhstan’s police

From 30 January to 3 February 2023, a delegation of eight officials from Kazakhstan’s Interior Ministry and police training institutions participated in a study visit to the United States of America (U.S.A.). The study visit was organized and hosted by the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) of the U.S. Department of State and the Embassy of the United States of America in Kazakhstan, with the aim of providing police officials from Kazakhstan with the opportunity to learn from U.S.A. experience in police training and community policing.

Accompanied by INL officials, a representative of the U.S. Embassy in Astana, UNODC staff from the Programme Office in Kazakhstan and UNODC Headquarters in Vienna, delegates held meetings with their counterparts from the Delaware State Police, Virginia State Police and the Montgomery County Police Department. During the meetings they received detailed information about processes on recruiting and hiring applicants, curriculum for training new officers and in-service officers and existing approaches in addressing community-oriented policing.

Particular attention was paid to professional training and related police infrastructure during meetings at the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Academy.

The study visit forms part of UNODC activities implemented under the project on support to police reform in Kazakhstan. The project is carried out with financial support from the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) of the U.S. Department of State.
